Strengthening Academic and Career Skills
A Standards-Based Approach for Building Trades and Construction Programs
This document was developed by educators and industry representatives to describe how building trades and construction courses and programs can help prepare successful students. There is a focus on three areas of the industry: carpentry, cabinetmaking, and heating/ventilation/air-conditioning (HVAC). This document discusses courses and programs being delivered in secondary schools in CA and in other states. The document shows how industry sector skill standards and academic standards complement and strengthen one another. There is an alignment of industry sector standards with activities that incorporate math, language arts, and other core standards and with building trades and construction industry standards and competency test requirements, focusing on core standards that are tested on the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).
